Which do you prefer?
I prefer a roll myself. IRS in dig races can be unforgiving (wheel hop) and expensive to repair. Not to say that I don't do it it's just I don't make it a habit . Consistantly always doing dig races will have me spending $2000. on four Goodyear Supercar Runflats sooner rather than later.
Yeah O.K I sound like a cheap skate. lol

I like the 20 roll because the race becomes more about the car and less about the car and driver. I like a dig, too, but many a stout horse have fallen because of the man in the saddle. The driver mod is VERY important.
the 20 roll has more room for error, yet still has somewhat of the feel of a dig. You still have to catch second awfully quick and do it right, so skill is still present, but not as much as the launch.
Purists will argue, correctly, that the truest race is from a dig because it takes into consideration all elements of the tussle: driver skill, torque to get out of the hole, and HP to keep it moving. But a race is a race is a race - if you're hummin along at 80 and somebody wants to drop the hammer and is trying to stomp a mudhole in you, you're racin'.
The 20 punch keeps just enough driver element into it, but it makes the rumble more about the car. It's not like there's a couple of guys lining up for a 100 meter dash - that's mano y mano. I think the 20 punch makes it more about the car. 40 rolls requires no zero skill. All about the car there.
I will say this - I have big respect for those guys who can steer from a stop. That is such a talent, and the ones who are good at it (like my late Uncle Harvey, God rest his soul) can just FEEL the traction. Uncle H could take your car, ANY car, and launch it a few times to see how it acted and he then he could just ride the ragged edge of breaking loose.
He used to have a '65 notchback with a .060 over 351W in it with a toploader 4-speed, and he would barely squeak the tires from the hole at the old Green Valley Raceway (long gone). I asked him once, "Can that thing even spin the tires?" I was just a kid; I didn't know. His next turn in line he just dumped the clutch and literally lit the tires up to 660, just white smoking it all the way just to show his little nephew what his mighty stang was capable of. Next time up? Just a little series of squeaks. Just a thing of beauty to behold. Even as a kid I thought, "How does he DO that?! That must be HARD!"
Joe Hayes can do it like that. I've seen it on video

GP.........your uncle sounds like he was the man !!!!
now, back to the question though. for me, from a stop. i think its more of a rush than doing a roll race. but a roll from like 10/15 from a light is also fun. i just prefer the dig. like you said, it takes driver skill, and a lot of times can be won from the holeshot.

A Dig. Why? Races tend to shut down well before 100mph because they are mostly situated inside city limits. Fastest I’ve gone was 80 in a 55 while dragging some dude in an older GT. And it’s more of a driver’s race. You pull a car by hooking well, and you win. If you spin, you loose. Less chance of spinning at 20 or 40…
The rolls on highways get up to a buck 20 and well beyond. Not my kind of deal.
