5.0 vs eclips gts?
ORIGINAL: dimebag
a guy in my auto tech class has an eclipse, its not the newest model or the model before that, but the one before that. i think its a gts? no turbo or anything. he has exhaust and an air intake. im compleetly stock. both sticks. what should i expect? ima run him either way, just wondering what i should expect the outcome to be.

He will win. Exhaust on a turbo car is worth A LOT! (1-2psi more boost normally). The GTS was turbo, it was a FWD turbo car. From a roll he wil lget you, from a dig its up to the driver unless you do a 0-40 and then you should get him. I bet he also has a few other things, MBC, etc.
The GST's are actually faster than the GSX's. Obvuisly cuz of the AWD on the GSX's. I worked on a '96 GST, when I took it out for a test drive, the car actually suprised me. From a roll he'll probably smoke a stock GT, maybe even a lightly modded one. THe one I test drove had 130k on the odo, and it would still light the tires at 30mph. When I took it out on the Eway, wasnt paying any attention to the speedo and I got it going 130 on the on ramp. Granted it was a 1/4 mile on ramp, but it still got up there pretty damn quick.

. I test drove a modified 2nd gen gs-t and my mustang the same day before deciding on a purchase. it had full bolt ons, boost controller, BOV and tune. it was weak as hell [>:]. so now im a proud mustang owner. not to say that a heavily modified DSM cant be fast, but they usually arent, and they are unreliable when they are fast most of the time.

thats because of sh*tty tires

It had Goodyear eagle RS-A's on it, in good condition. I agree with you about goodyears being **** tires though. And if that GS-T had full bolt ons and didnt suprise you theres a couple of things that come to my mind. Either you dont know how to drive a turbo'd car (most people dont), or the car was fuked up, or the boost wasnt on. The one I was driving was BONE STOCK. Not even a CAI. Granted it was a dog off the line but once I hit about 15mph the thing took off like a raped ape. From a roll I wouldve EASILY taken a stock stang in that eclipse. Maybe the wastegate was messed up and not letting off boost. Who knows, but it was damn quick.

no 2nd or 3rd gen eclipse has been able to hit consecutive 14s stock. most of them (especially the 2nd gens) are mid 15 second cars, so im not sure why you think they would beat a mustang, especially because the stang i chose is a PI GT (check the sig). even the 4th gens cant beat a PI stang and they are the fastest stock eclipse to date. and the car i drove was an auto, so driving style didnt affect much. u have to remember, we are talking about an average difference of just over a second in the quarter mile between the cars. im justified in sayin the car felt weak. Now, a gs-t would feel closer to a stock 5.0, but I still view the 5.0 as a better platform
I've raced a turbo'd clipse and with decent mods (exhaust intake and boost controller) they are low 14 second cars. You should be able to outlaunch him if he's not on drag radials. The longer the race the more time his turbo has to spool up and make power. From 0 to 60 you should have him after that who knows.
