what the crap
One thing that many people do not know is that some magazines use a standard launch procedure, meaning that all cars are launched at say, 2500 rpm, whether it's a Viper or Civic they are testing. Not only that but they do not powershift. The key to getting good times out of a car is the launch (duh
) AND not being afraid to break the car. Why did I run consistant 12.5's whrn all I had was a lid maf and dr's? Because I drive the car like I don't care if I break it. I don't want to break it, but if I do it's no biggie, it's just part of the game.

Not to mention they don't use[most of the time] dragstrips to time there cars. The equipment they use starts the timer as soon as the car moves.Where as at a dragstrip there is 12[or 16] inches between the prestage beam and the stage beam, meaning you can shallow stage[stage just enough to break the stage beam] and get a running start on your e.t,which is basically the length of your front tire since the timer dosen't start untill the front tire leaves the stage beam. It's not much, but it does make a difference.
I agree chevy gets the vette to do 11's by shifting full throttle no clutch, Knowone in their right mind would do that to their own car. I have seen new vipers and z06's and my local dragstrip and most only get high twevles I have not seen a z06 get into the 11's.

Motor Trend doesn't really go ***** out when testing cars, but here are the results from their Viper/Z06/Shelby shootout, December '06 issue. This is a mainstream mag that is unbiased toward any particular make (although they seem to fellate BMW and Honda every chance they get).
Shelby: 0-60 4.4, 1/4 mile 12.7 @ 114.2
Viper: 0-60 3.9, 1/4 mile 12.1 @ 120.9
Z06: 0-60 3.8, 1/4 mile 11.7 @ 125.2

Kinda sorta off-topic, but not really since we're talking about Vette drivers. Anyone remember that brand new black Z06 on Pinks: All Out that made it to the elite 8? Well, that guy is on the Corvette forums and this is what he had to say:

You have a sharp eye Mr Sallen, it was a 2006 Z06, that was me.
My friggin clutch took a dive the second I launched, and lost to that 1970 black Firebird. Earlier that day I was cutting 10.12's@140 and that is how I got into the show. If my clutch would have held together, I think I would have made it to at least the field of 6. All of us were running around the same ET's (high 9's to 10.15's), but only a couple of cars were running close to the MPH I was running (140).
All being equal, a good launch with all the proper shifts, a car running 10.15 @ 132 -vs- another running the same but at 140...chances are the 140 car will win! And that is what I was banking on. The plan was working until my clutch woes; until next time.
By the way, on 18" Dr's, the car ran a 9.88@140.2 (N2O) and 10.66@131 (N/A) about a month ago!
My mods are: Air-Charger cai kit, Halltech F1 filter, American Racing LT headers, 160*stat, Tuning, a Ram dual disk kit and a 100hp NOS dry shot...that's it. The valve covers have NEVER EVER been off!
Thanks,
Carlos

Thanks for the kind words guys. The clutch currently in my car is the Ram dual disk unit; it's a bit noisy but it grabs.
Yes, the new Z06 is an amazing car. It does not take them much to get them going. Heck, BONE stock on EMT's I ran a couple of 11.42 @ 125 passes when the air was cool early in the year here in Dallas TX. This past June I was able to run a 10.98@130 on EMT's with my above mods minus the F1 filter, the ram clutch and the N2O!
I will agree with you guys, I much prefer the All out format, they kept telling us to run it out or go home.
Again, if only my newly installed ram clutch could have lasted, I would have done some serious damage. The car was begining to run better as the night came, and I had all the confidence in the world that I would have ran high NINES that night. They allowed a little wiggle room in ET gains since traction and ambient temps were improving over the 100* temps during the day.
Yes, that lady was very down to earth. She is the one that knocked out my buddy Alex (the silver C6). Her truck had a HUGE alcohol motor in it...and it was fast N/A piece of metal. Alex was spraying a 250hp shot on his basiclly stock C6...his mods: (air-charger, Stinger, LG LT headers, tuning and a dual stage NOS set up) all work done by LG motorsports and couldn't run her down.
Thanks,
Carlos

A car hasn't impressed me like the new Z06 does in a long time. Reading stories like this one and Mr. Rogers' for example shows me exactly what I'd be looking for in a performance car: something that with very little modification can run a road course and a drag strip with the most fully built race cars that exist.
