Default Downshifting???

This is off the topic, but I know that you are a vet. When people cost at 80mph in 5th and then go to 3rd to "punch it" to race, what performance advantage does one get if any?

I was trying to think of a way to say it, but I couldn't! The question is so basic I don't even know how to respond!

*No offense to Etanimulc*

it;s the same Idea as an auto rolling 50 MPH and NAILING the gas. the tranny "kicks down" to a lower gear so that the RPMS can biuld faster.

Well its kinda like..... Its kind of like starting out in fifth gear from a stop and asking yourself why im not moving and i just stalled.... If im going at 60mph in 5th and i punch it u cant even tell.... now if i throw it in 3rd the thing takes off...

Just ask yourself... if you were on a huge hill riding a bike... starting it in the highest gear and ask yourself to peddle as fast as you could up the hill.. how well do you think your going to do?

Simple formula: Downshifting throws you into higher rpms, and higher rpms means more power, and more power means a greater acceleration

Mine won't downshift from any speed. The only way mine downshifts is if i go below 1500rpm.
