Running a Ford 9" in any car isn't uncommon. It's damn near the best rear end ever built. Why is that so surprising to you?
I also hate to start a debate, but, Actually the strongest was a dana 60 or 44. But in truth, truth, the 9" was very weak, stock. The internals were cast iron, compared to a GM 12 bolt which used nodular iron internals. The reason why us old guys like 9" Ford is the ease of splining the axles (straight, not beveled) and the 3rd member can be taken out and set up and switched out with others very easily. So a gear change would take 30 min. Where-as, GM, Mopar and Ford 8.8's require a full disassembly and set up, plus they use C-clips which are not allowed once you reach a certain e.t. The afterMARKET 9"s use nodular iron parts and sometimes forged or billet components. BUT, you'll pay the price. My fathers 68 Camaro had a Strange that the inital reaar end set up was $6k, not including the other 6 sets of 3rd members he used for different tracks. they were $1,000 a pop.
That's just some info for ya'll.
