When street racing, what is the best way to start off the line in an auto?

1st gear?
2nd gear?
In drive?
In neutral while reving the motor then throwing it in drive? (Can't be good for the motor)
With a computor controlled auto ( like yours) always leave it in drive when racing. Shifting it manually will not make it any faster at the track or on the street.

Keep it on the track.
+1 a couple kids my age just got caught street racing here and they are looking at 10 years. just not worth it. track fees are way less than a neg driving ticket (if your lucky)
Dude no way could you get ten years for street racing. Maybe if you killed someone in the process
More facts less BS:

HB 1326 automatically suspends for one year the drivers license of anyone convicted of illegally racing on a public roadway. Before the license can be reinstated, the driver would have to complete 10 hours of community service. The penalty for street racing increases to a Class B misdemeanor.

The law also increases the penalties for other offenses committed while street racing, such as racing drunk, possessing open containers of alcohol in the vehicle when racing or seriously injuring or killing someone during a race. The offenses range from a Class A misdemeanor to a second-degree felony.

So in order to get to the felony level you do basically have to kill or seriously injure someone. No one is facing 10 years for a simple speed contest on the public roadways. Get a grip.

Leaveit in drive and power break it and rise the rpms up, let it go not quite WOT but put it down and launch it with the least amount of wheel spin possible, a shift kit is a great mod for an auto as well, I've seen cars run .2 faster with one and its a relatively cheap mod, just my .02, and take it easy on this guy will you fellas, you're treating him like a honda owner, and although this is off the threads topic, there is absolutely no way that even in communist china that you can get 10 years for street racing

But arent firmer shifts gonna make the car perform better

You can street race, just don't do it in a residential area. Keep in on abandoned roads meant for businesses and keep it guarded on a way in and a way out so traffic doesn't cause any shortcommings. You got to be smart about it, cops appreciate organized behavior and frown on erratic kids going 150mph on the freeway. If you are out of their site you're out of their mind.....
Well said.

Heres Bret's tactics on safe street racing First I patrol theare around where Im going to race to see what the conditions are... where the road is perfrectlystraight, where that nastyhidden curve is, is there bumps in the road,is there water around, etc. AlsoI keep a pair of 12milewalkee talkies in my car and at the end of the "track" Im running on, I'll have a lookout car stationed for peds and cops. If we're in the middle of the race and I get the call of headlights, I lay on my hornand we both hit the brakes. This way we can use both lanes on a 2 lane street, and oh yea, there's basicallyno risk of jail time or killing someone. That always a plus. It's not like Iplan my racesor anything haha we have semi-organized races/shows around here. Sometimes we just scrape together a few people and do some organized racing. Its better than racing spontanious flooring it I guess

EDIT: I guess I should answer the original question being asked.Sorry haha. It depends though... if I'm racing from a dig, I torque brake it to like 2k I think it is, leave it in D, and enjoy the wonders of an auto trans. But if I'm roll racing, it's different. I'll ask to back down/speed up to 20-30in 1stor 45-50 in 2nd. 20-30 is perfect for a 1st gear roll, 45-50 is perfect for a 2nd gear roll on stock auto gears. At least that's what I've found. If you roll race from D then you'll feel the trans kick down to the top of a lower gear, stay there for like a second, then upshift. It's sooo "laggy" feeling.

Recap... torque brake and D for dig, drop to20 in 1st when rolling, and drop to 45 in 2nd when rolling.

Shifting my auto manually (Before my tune) seemed to give firmer shifts, but the shifts also seemed slower to me. <<I know, it doesn't really make sense, at least not to me at 0500 hours.

I agree with the Jarhead. From a dig, leave it in D, from a roll manually drop it down to 1 or 2 if you are going slow enough. I have found that to be the one thing I hate (Except for loss of fun factor) about my auto, if I am rolling and hammer it I can't trust the computer to downshift to the strongest gear.

The shifts feel firmer because the trans pump is spinning faster at the higher rpmbut the engine is most likley above the optimal shift point. If you want firmer shifts, buy a shift kit.

I apologize for wasting 40 sec of your life.

You should just kick back and..............phorr20
The reason why i don't feel the need to take it easy is that some stupid kid not too long ago killed himself and i don't know if he injured anybody else because his failure to drive well. He got some new part for his car n the first night he goes out and races and kills himself, and this was in a HONDA, so I'm taking it he didn't know how to drive a considerably slow car compared to a V8 mustang. I've had so many encounters with ****ty drivers who have either wrecked into a car that i'm a passenger in, or that has almost wrecked my vehicle, one which happened only 2 days ago, by another high schooler, and i just turned 17. Point is, learn the car, then you can fool around, by now means are you learning your car by getting online and asking what poeple should do.
