Buick GSX Stage 1 Kill

Buick GSX Stage 1 Kill
Things did not work out fora stoplight dig, so we settled fortwo 40 mph rolls. The results were the samefor both races. We were dead eventhru 2nd,I steadily pulled awayhalfway thru 3rd(I love what the VCT does in that gear. It feels like a small turbo kicking in!), and was ahead by 2 cars when we shut down at 90 mph.
We stopped and talked afterwards. He had a rare 1970 Buick GSX 455 Stage 1 with a 4 speed manual conservatively stock rated at 360 hp(For insurance purposes. It was approx. 400-425 hp according to some sources), and 510 lb-ft of torque. It also had a full exhaust, which sounded great btw. But the engine had a little over 100K miles, so it was probably a little "tired".
But it was fun lining up against one of the 1970 muscle car "monsters", and proving that a smaller engine coupled with modern technology can emerge as the winner(Less weight also helped).

Honestly most muscle cars from the 60's and 70's are dogs compared to modern muscle/pony cars. Most of it is due to crap suspension as opposed to a lack of power. My 69 Mach 1 was a beautiful car and had good power but drove like a pregnant yak. It would wander all over the place andrear end felt like it was just floating out there.Eventhough it was just the 351w 4v if you stomped the gas it would just sit there are toast thetires, I'd hate to imagine what a 428 or a 455 would do.

a co-worker of mine drives a 455 special to work everyday. i got to drive it recently and it moves fast for a big car.
on the motor its capable of low 13s and he has a 300hp nitrous shot that pushes the big car to mid 11's.
thats with a 2.79 gear ratio!!!

Good kill but regarding weight, his GSX weighed about the same as my 1969 SS 396 Chevelle which weighed in at 3,550lbs so they are very near even weight wise, the Buick might weigh a little more depending on options, but not enough to give you that much advantage.

Plus, there was no tire burning during our two 40 mph roll races(Except for my 2nd to 3rd chirp).

Iestimated that it weighed more because of its huge engine. But if our weights were equal, then that makes my wins much more satisfying.

Considering he has no fuel injection, 4 gears with a trucklike transmission, a frame that is similar to an F250, lifters that slide on a camshaft lobe,. It was probably sastifying for him too, being only 2 cars back.

During the "before race" discussion, he commented that his car has a full exhaust mod, it's equipped with a rare 4-speed manual tranny, his engine producesover 400 hp and over 500 lb-ft of torque, and that a bone stock 455 GSX did the 1/4 in 13.3 seconds.
During the "after race" discussion, he saidthat his enginewasproducingless than normalpowerbecause the ambient temperaturewas in the 90's(so does my S197),the distributor's centrigugal advancemechanism needs adjusting, and he's going to have the engine rebuilt because it has over 100K miles on it.
Based on those comments, it definitely appeared that he was not happy about losing.
