Even with a bad driver, I still don't believe it was a true STI. The thing is AWD for god sakes, don't take a genious to launch it. Traction is not a issue like it is for you. A regular WRX, sure if he misses a few shifts you'd probably stay with him and if he was horrible, MAYBE edge him out. A STI stock will trap around 103-105 versus your 91-93ish, your not beating one that is trying to race you.

 

aren't they hard to launch or something? gotta be in the correct high rpm range or something like that? maybe i'm thinking of a FWD car but i'm not sure

The OP did say he had about five lengths. Not to call BS in a mean way or anything, but he must be on crack to think he beat an STI. Think about it...AWD, 300+HP with a turbo, even a WRX, has what,, 220 or something, light-weight, etc..He could not drive for ****. In my Stock S197, which would butt rape your 96 GT, I would always be a length or so behind, when I raced them. Sure, I beat a couple before, not by much, maybe a length or two. Should I have won? No! It was a WRX badged to be an STI, or it was an STI, and the kit was partially blind, high, on every drug, had only his left arm/hand, and no legs/feet.

Ha, that be the reason I said "As high as your willing" 6k dump not exactly a great idea. 3-4k dump would work out quite a bit better.
