Shot depends on build and tune. I've seen engines blow up on 50 shots, and I've seen cars at the track run fine on 500, 800, even shots over 1,000.
it's also highly dependant on your compression ratio as well... high compression engines = harder to tune and more prone to detonation as you increase the size of your jets

a low compression engine will take to bigger shots easily and provide an easier process during the tuning

EDIT:
and this is probably a really good reason why SRT4's can handle such a big shot... they have a compression ratio of 8.1:1
And what do you suppose the dynamic C/R is once the engine sees 10lbs of boost? There really is a ton of shady info going on in here. Higher compression engines love nitrous (think LSx engines). THe realitive saftey really depmends on the set up, the tune and the supporting systems. IMO a wet shot is much safer than a dry, when you add a stand alone fuel system to a wet shot it becomes even safer. With a stand alone you can run a fuel like C16 in the auxilary fuel cell, this will lessen any chance for detonation. The whole question is just like any other, the answer depends on many varibles. To me a safe shot on a properly set up V8 car is 150-175 wet and maybe 125 dry. Dry shots tend to be less forgiving IMO because they need the cars primary fuel system to add fuel where a wet shot adds it's own fuel.

Nitrous is all about the setup.

It is better to take advice from someone who actually sprays, than someone who reads about it.

Its safe as long as your not stupid about it. Don't just buy a kit, hook it up and go spray 125+ shots on your stock car. Get a tune and buy a window switch at least, and then as long as your keeping it 150 shots and under you should be alright. Personally I still wouldnt spray over 125 on any car with a stock engine, but I'm all about safety.
