No prob. And yeah, that's a safe way to play it. Anything w/ an 'S' badge on it is gonna be quick. Anything w/ an 'RS' badge is packing some serious heat....

at the time we raced i had intake, catback and gears. . . he had an aftermarket down pipe, dump valve after 3k, running on high boost (18psi?), b&g coilovers (lowest possible supsension he said), intake, custom exhaust (below 3k it didnt dump), giac reflash for 93 octane, aftermarket b.o.v, a bunch of other stuff that i dont know of. . . he didnt even come close to staying with me. . . im not saying they all suck, i mean i made it sound like that lol but in my personal experience his car was def a dog. the mk5 is heavier than the mk4 with about the same horsepower with .2 more liters.

The MkV's are a little heavier, but they have a 27hp gain, and a way, way broader torque curve. Equal drivers, a new GTI will yank an older 1.8T model. Also, something everyone keeps leaving out is that the new 2.0T's are Direct Injected and respond to mods much better. Not too mention they hold boost better.W/ those mods, that guy should have given you a hell of a run if not beat you. Sounds like that car is in dire need of the driver mod.....

lol thats probably the case. if he gets meth injection and a bigger turbo like he keeps saying then he wont need the driver mod lol

Hmm...I'm going to post here, not to flame but just for general information. I'll start by introducing myself, I'm a fan of all cars, my first was an 82 regal with a rebuilt 350 and 700 tranny, my years of loving autos has led me into the volkswagen scene, after being in the honda scene. I like mustangs, more on the upper end, the cobra's, 5.0's ect. ect. A few months back I raced a mustang with a pretty loud exhaust, it was black, I thought it was a GT, the owner informed me it was a 4.6l swap. The road was a littledamp, and it was a short burst only to about 80, we were neck and neck until about the end of my 3rd gear and the beginning of my 4th gear, where his power finally gained him a lead of about my front bumper to his rear quarter panel. It was fun, we both laughed, congradulated each other, and thanked each other for the fun time. This was shocking as living in Northern Florida, just about every 99+ model year mustang owner is a complete straw chewing hillbilly with no sense at all. I was in my 2003 VW GTI 20th Anniversaary Edition.

This isn't a kill story of any sorts, but just some information, I searched around for mustang vs gti stories just to find that story to humor myself and see what that guy might have posted, my searches failed, I did come upon this forum and noticed a lot of misinformation regarding VW/Audi automobiles. I feel I should educate most of you, as, in all reality, killing a VW with a simple ECU reflash (chip/tune) shouldn't be that great.

1st lesson:

Know your VW, there are 3 prime tuner VW models, and each has it's own Characteristics:

Jetta - 4 door front wheel drive compact sedan. Comes in a 1.8T, VR6, 1.9TDI, and a 2.0
GTI/Golf - 2-door hatchback, the GTI comes in the 1.8T, 2.9l 12v or 2.8l 24v VR6, 1.9TDI, and the Golf label that is a 2.0
R32 - 24v 3.2l VR6

Now, that is only for the late 1999 to the early 2005 models. Anything before 1999, is either a 12v Vr6, or a 2.0, this goes for GTi, Jetta, Passats as well

Next is a little engine info

2.0
From early 90's - 2005 -They made less than 90 hp to the wheels. Need I say more? And they look like every other 1.8T and VR6 on the road, and odds are, the ones you see with the most body mods and biggest rims, are 2.0, because there is no point in spending money on the motors as they are craptastic. they average a 16 something or another 1/4. Often called the 2.Slow's for that reason.

1.8T
From 99-01 they came with 150hp @ 5700 RPM and 155 ft.lbs @ 1750 RPM and the turbos run at 8.7 PSI
From 01-05they came with 180hp @ 5500 rpm and 174 Ft.lbs @ 1950 RPM and the turbos run at 11.6PSI

12V VR6
From 99.5-02.5 They came with 174hp (torque and RPM's couldn't be found, even on the best of VW websites but expect torque to be 15-20 higher than hp and rpms to be a bit higher than the 1.8t's)

24vVR6
From 02.5 and on They came with 200hp (torque and RPM's couldn't be found, even on the best of VW websites but expect torque to be 15-20 higher than hp and rpms to be a bit higher than the 1.8t's)

24v 3.2 VR6
250hp @ 236 ft lbs

Now, on average, a 100% stock 1.8T, 2.8l vr6, 2.9l vr6 will run a consistant low 15-14.8 1/4 mile. I personally ran a 15.4 on a hot day on every day street tires with a full tank of gas in mine. There are automatic vr6's, 1.8Ts, there are 5 spd vr6's and 1.8t's and there are 6 speed 1.8t's and vr6s. Newer vr6's are 6 speeds, Only the special edition GLI Jettas, and 20th anniversery GTI's are 6 speeds, you can tell those apart because they have black Recaro Seats, clear indicator of a 6spd.

R32's are a beast all on their own, from the outside may look similar to a GTI, however do not share the same chassis, they have independant suspension, where as GTI's have a cross beam, they are AWD, 6spd and basically an entirely different car from a GTI. 1/4 times on those vary depending on the driver, I've seen them as low as a 13.9 stock and as high as 15.2 in the 1/4 depending on how ****ty the driver was.

Now on to what mods do what....A turbo at 15+ psi on any of the VR6's will = to 300+ hp, and some dont even use an intercooler, they do this with water/meth injection. This is where the "you could be in for a suprise factor" comes into effect. If a vr6 spools, expect a good race. N/A, I haven't seen a VR6 other than the r32 get over 250whp. Just not a market for it.

1.8T's, these are the tuners choice, wealth of knowledge, and a huge market for parts. Most real racers go for the big turbo upgrade, usually a GT28rs or greater, maybe the t3/t4 or a super 60. GT28rs is the most common, it's the cheapest, and makes 340-380 whp depending on the chip and accompanying mods.

Outside of that upgrade, there isn't a 1.8T over 300whp. 3 companies make ECU flashes for 1.8t's, this = to about 200 whp and 230-260torque @ about 19-21 psi depending on the maker of the chip. Most common accompianing mods include a 3 inch downpipe, 3 inch exhaust, a new diverter valve, a new fpr, a short ram intake, and at most a front mount intercooler. Most i've seen from this setup, 230 whp and 290 ft lbs of torque. the k04 upgrade is overrated, rarely are they over 300 whp and rarely are they reliable. basic chip + exhause puts any 1.8t into the low 14s high 13s in the 1/4 mile.

Now, I've seen the "cant handle boost remarks". Everything on the 1.8t is forged except the rods. The rods are the weakest link. There are plenty of guys however running 380+ hp that have over 100,000 miles on the original motor and race every weekend. But it is the rods that snap if anything goes. Thats why most replace their rods for forged rods for 250+ bucks when going big turbo, the k03 and the k04 don't produce enough power to cause damage to the motors.

The lack of searching boggles my mind, I've seen a few people who know their VW's and audis but some of the info is just bogus.

1 Thing I can say, and this is proven over and over again, and often people on VW forums are called idiots for thinking they can beat everything, a v6 mustang, a 1.8t, and a 2.8-2.9l vr6 all run the same times OEM. So basically, if it's stock for stock, its left up to the driver, it always is from my experience with vw's and v6 mustangs. Now when it comees to mods, thats another story.

And to show you I know a little about something in VW's, here is a buddies VW Corrado (some of you have no clue what that is) in Gainesville and Tampa, it's a 12v 4cylinder 100% street legal.

That info is great and all, but the real topic was regarding Audi's. Someone just strayed off and brought up the GTI...

Think they all share the same motors so everything applies.

Some are, some aren't. And at any rate, knowing the different models and engines that are specif to VW's does very little to contribute to the topic at hand. Although I'll agree that some of the people needed the educating. Some guys here wouldn't know the difference between Beetle and a Passat....
