Bull****. No way a 1.8T is picking up 50 whp from a tune alone. The MK4 GTI would be lucky to get 150 whp stock, so maybe a full exhaust, intake, tune and a few other things could get them to about 200 whp but no way a tune alone.

We did it tonight.
Well the road was clean free of ice and un-used.
I won by 4 car lengths (my max speed was 109mph).. well mustang car lengths. I would have done better but he has somethign called "lanuch control" and I was slow of the line.
Wasn't timed.
So it is put to rest. Lightly modded musgang GT > lightly modded GTI
When we got back home he bought the beers and I have to admit I like the GTI's interior more then the mustangs but overall I love my mustang.. would have still loved it even if I lost.

the new GTI's are a pain to launch and they're heavy (3600lbs for a 3 door hatch is crazy). even with a tune, they're not too quick, at least not from a dig. from a roll is a different matter
edit: ah, he must have had the new DSG trans in his then. the 6-speed cars don't have that
