C4 Vette kill, but how?
Was in the car coming back from the shore with my girl freind and another freind in the back and suddenly i saw a redish vetter from the 91-98 i guess with a fairly old man driving with his wife. Figuring he wants nothing to do with some kid in a mustang (also thinking i would get owned) i drove on past, but not a moment later i see him again and hes making it obvious hes wanting to keep up. Again i find it hard to belive so i look over and see him and his wife laughing and suddenly they pass. So i decide to go again and sure enough he tried to catch up, but he couldnt. it wasnt until the tolls were i got into a change line and he went to his ez-pass that he ever passed me. and the whole way there we were both just racing and laughing about it, just having fun. Do u think it was an auto? All my mods are is an intake, 70 mm throttle body and flow masters with a MAFs that i havent even recived yet (damn you jegs). So what do you guys think for a mustang of 4,489 pounds with 3 people in it killing a vette? Personally, i think its pretty damn cool.
97 and up vette's are the LS1 C5. The C4 could have been anywhere from a 83-96 and unless it was a 96 LT4 you should have kept up like you did, those early C4's are turds.
I always heard they sucked but found it hard to belive, guess they do if my car stomped it. then again ive heard ford always fibbed about cobras hp but even if they did in my year, i couldnt be over 260-270. guess those mods are whats really good.
Dude an 83-89 vette has barly 230 hp and they are not that light, and the only way to tell the year is by the tail lights or rims, and most older ones have had newer style rims put on them.
it was the one with the latter tail lights and newer rims. i only know cause i saw an earlier one that same day and said to myself "hey they do look diffrent in the back" and i dont just have 250 hp i have other bolt ons killer. killed a vette and theres no way around that, but im not gonna go out looking for c5s or something, not until i get my new 306 engine block and other goodies
Well, heres the skinny on C4s. There was no '83. (Well, 5, but we won't count them.) ; )
84 had 205, 270 tq, one of the worst years for a Corvette.
85-E87 had 230 horse, 300lb/tq.
L87-88 had 240 horse, 310lb/tq.
89-91 had 250 horse, 325lb/tq. (Also got 6sp tranny, faster.. explained below)
92 had 300 horse, 315lb/tq.
93-95 all gained little bumps in power till finally in 95 (and 96 auto) you had about 330 horse/325lb/tq.
96 manual / GS cars had the LT4. 360 hp/330(ish) lb/tq (an LS1 competitor).
Now, if it was a >92, the intake on the car limits it to about 4400 RPM. They just don't breath higher. So, on the highway, I'm not surprised. I took my father's bone-stock '85 against a '95 Saab 9000 aero (turbo, 225horse) and got stomped 100+. I beat him to 100 though.
Now, pre-89 had a 4+3 tranny. The 4th gear runs to 4400 at about 100. So, you'll stomp an unmodded L98 at over 100+ with ease. They just don't have nuts up there, and you don't have anything but overdrive to shift to to lower the RPM back into the powerband. However, they make plenty of power down low, so they're still good for low to mid 14s with a decent driver.
And all the talk about weight, all C4s vary but are around 3400lbs (ish).
To tell the difference, I will demonstrate with a picture. My Vette looks like a 92-96, and my father's has the older look. Which was it?

So, that is why you beat him. If it were an L98, they're pigs on the highway. : )
Good kill either way. : )
[EDIT] Just read that it had the newer rims and taillights. The '91 (like mine) had the updated front and rear bumper and rims, but still had the restrictive L98 stock intake.
