I got a DOT/Snell M2005 rated closed face for like $115 out the door at a motorcycle shop. And it's not just wrecks that make the helmet worthwhile, but at 100+mph if a rock gets kicked up into your windshield or you hit a bird with the windshield, you'll be glad you had a helmet.

When I first ran I wasn't aware of the helmet rule so they warned me when I ran a 13.8 but they didn't get mad. I have a dirtbike helmet I use now, they approved it last time I went.
