Auto or Manual???
I was thinking about selling my V6 stang(5spd) and getting a GT and I've heard a few diffrent places that if i want to drag/race alot that a Automatic is the way to go because its all done smoothly for you and so on.....so is this true?? Also i want this car not only to race alot but to drive around as an every day driver as well. Please help.
thanks.
thanks.
Welcome to the forums. Auto is better if you have a high hp car thats running low 1/4 miles. Otherwise if you can shift then there's no problem with a manual. Manual is more fun, but auto is better for everyday driving when you don't want to be bothered with shifting all the time. Anyway, Have fun and good luck.
>10.0s = manual all the way (more fun on the streets)
9.0s - 9.99s = depends your shifting ability (cars this fast are fun on the streets no matter what transmission)
<9.0s = 2 speed powerglide all the way (you don't want none of this on the streets)

I am of the impresson that the Mustang GT, unless highly modified (torque converter, etc), really needs a manual transmission to run good 1/4 mile times. In the f-bodies, it's not quite as big a difference.

Except for that fact that the autos tend to blow up before you can get really good runs

but yes. I agree. I do not fully understand why the mustangs react so strongly to the difference in tranny when we do not. But it might have something to do with drivestrain loss. Stock my 6 speed had almost exactly a 10% driveline loss. Thats a REALLY good number. One stock auto I checked was about 12.5% stock. If someone could provide me with..
Stock RWHP from a dyno run and what the Stock HP at the crank is I can run a formula on the numbers and figure really close the amount of loss. It might be interesting. anyone that has stock dyno runs of an auto and manual, say 99+ GT post it up. then just tell me what it's suposed to have factory at the crank
Stock auto 99-04 GT auto put down 210 to 220 RWHP. The manuals put down around 230. Torque on the auto is around 240 and the manual is around 260. Speed wise some of the autos can be quick. I went 14.3 in my stock '04 auto. If you want something fast as long as you can shift go with the manual. The auto can be made fast but it takes more work.
