i agree that a auto can be superior to a manual w/shift kit etc.. its alot harder to drive a 5spd good than it is to drive and auto on the strip my cousin has an auto WS6 and its mean as hell but its kinda driver preference i prefer a five speed more fun to me yea the clutch wears on you in traffic but manuals can get better mileage also

We all drive "high performance" vehicles. Some more high performance than others, but still, you get the picture. My point...who gives a rats *** about gas mileage? My 10mpg does me good....that was before I put a 4 speed in it.....oh noes!

Well, I responded to the off topic thread, but, 99.9% of the time, a built automatic is gonna go faster than a manual tranny.

As I said in the other post, if you want to consistantly go fast at the drag strip, get an auto with a stall. If you want to have more fun, get a manual. If you want the best of both worlds, get an auto with a reverse manual valve body, transbrake, and a huge stall.

It really depends on how fast you wanna go. In the end, an auto is greater than a manual.
I disagree. Referring once again to allan futral, he goes 9.88's with a 6 speed. If you can drive like a mother****er, 6 speed all the way. or in this case, 5 speed. The fact is most people cant drive as good as a quick shifting auto, but if you can, not only are you more badass, but tis hell of alot more fun.

Also, if you get an auto, be prepared to get your *** handed to you in highway rolls.

IMO manual is better, especially if its a stang.

Not exactly, depends on the roll and the gears in the cars.

I bet the bank that Allan goes faster with a Powerglide/TH400 behind his car. He would at least run identical times back to back....how many 6 second cars run manuals?

Like Fat Nick said, it would depend on what STR and stall size said auto had. Besides, who races from a roll? Besides me and almost everyone I know? A real race is from a stop...I don't care what anyone says.

get the manual, everyone i know with a cool car that has auto wishes it was manual for the fun to drive factor. btw, an auto with shift kit and gears stock for stock will beat a manual? a guy with a stick could use that money to get gears and drag radials and blow the auto away

I have a friend (aka my boss) with a 10 second TA (built 408) and another friend with a 430whp SRT-4. Both have 3 speed automatics in them (yes, the SRT made that 430 THROUGH the 3 speed, its a BAD *** car), as they switched over from 6 and 5 speeds, respectively. Both have told me they would switch back in a heartbeat due to its not nearly as much fun to drive.

Just a thought.

And whoever said that an automatic car with a shifter would outrun any manual stock for stock anyday of the week, is ignorant. Me and my friend ran after i had frist gotten my car. I had a lid and a 6 speed, he had a lid/shift kit/ported MAF/catback, and an automatic. We ran from a dig, and i took him by about a car. Not to blow smoke up my *** but i am a fairly decent driver, and the camaro isnt nearly as difficult to launch as my stang was. That being said 6 speed > Auto on that day.

I drove a foxbody that had a C4 tranny with a reverse manual valve body in it and a ratchet shifter. That thing was a blast to drive. You have to downshift and upshift it, it's basically a clutchless manual. They should invest in a reverse manual valve body.

The last time I raced a modded six speed SS on the highway I gave him the hit. When he got about three cars ahead I decided that would be enough, and I proceeded to blow right on by him. If you have enough power sometimes it won't matter. Six speeds are more fun to drive but I love going to the track in the spring and fall and an auto does me fine. Eventually I will be putting in a 4L80E behind a TT 408, and I will be shooting for atleast 1000rwhp through that big tranny.
