Its funny that you have to say it like that, too many people think because a car is an auto it is slow. GM automatics are really good trannys and they also work really well at the track.
Hell no automatics aren't slow, a built auto is actually a better tranny that a stick. Consistent times, HARD *** SHIFTING and you really can't mess up in a race. All an auto needs to run good is a shift kit, bigger stall and some gears (I know that doesn't have anything to do with the tranny) but it's close enough, and on a automatic you need gears. I got a AOD 5.0 with just a shift kit right now and I'm getting ready to do 3.73s and damn it does good so far.
