Default 97 cobra vs. STI

Well i was just on my way home when i saw an STI with green under body lights. I get next to him an i rev so he does then he follows me. We finally get to open road and he slows to a stop, i follow, knowing that the STI will get me from the dig cuz of the 36 deg weather outside. So i we go like i thought i spin in first and right till the end of second. Then we go from a roll of about 40, im not gonna lie it was real close but i was in front by a half a car the whole time and when i hit 110 i got a whole car on him. By 120 I think he knew that I was just gonna keep puling. When that was over i pull over and walk back to his car to ask him what he has done. He disappointedly said quite a bit actually. I could se he had gauges, bov , some 3/4" by 3” boxes sitting on his steering column that I have no clue about, and definitely exhaust. Im not to familiar what the boost controllers look like, to be honest i don’t really know much about how these guys mod these STIs and EVOS, but i feel that this one was a fairly heavily moded car. Maybe you STI guys will be able to tell me more about mods this guy may have had.

Who knows what he had. He kind of sounds like a ricer, so "quite a bit" could have just been a BOV, boost controller, intake, and a bunch of guages. He might have had engine management too at the very most, but then I'd think that his power wouldn't die out at higher speeds if he had. The boxes were probably an APEXI electronic boost controller, possibly a turbo timer, maybe SIRIUS? lol... I don't know. He may have also had the TurboXS DTEC which basically allows a Game Boy Advance to become a boost, EGT, oil temp guage and tuning tool.

It sounds to me like his turbo was probably the stock one (or else he probably would have mentioned it), which also corresponds to him slowing down at higher speeds. The VF39 (stock STI turbo) is a bit better than the stock WRX turbo, but it is still designed for faster spool up and not top end power. It is definitely capable of over 300awhp though with a really good tune.

Yeah heh, dead serious.

The STI that I'm purchasing from a fellow member of the Subaru community has the DTEC setup. He has it mounted to his dashboard. I'm not crazy about it, but it's a pretty accurate digital boost guage FWIW heh. THIS STI is fing unbelievably fast though, I'm really excited to drive it again. GT35-R turbo, FMIC, huge injectors, same engine management as my car, Tein Flex coilovers with EDFC (in car dampening adjustability), touch screen hooked up to in-car PC (hooked into the engine management software for realtime logging), etc etc etc.

The setup is capable of 400-500awhp depending on the tune and type of gas and is completely monstrous. Supposedly several people are putting buslengths on Z06s with this setup and I can definitely attest for how scary fast it is.

Sorry for the thread hijack, but I'm just excited to pick it up =p

BTW anyone want to buy a WRX? ^_^

I've wanted a bugeye since they introduced the body style in March of 2001.

But alas, I have a car I'm happy with.

just because i said i dont know a lot about the mods doesent mean that i am stupid. I know that it wasnt SIRIUS so a boost controller maybe. The kid was a bit of a rice, because of the lights, did i mention that he had green int lights also that was how i could see in the car. I feel that the kid did have more dollars in his car than i doo mine though which doesent matter, but this means that an un moded STI would be a cake walk for me and my car. Might be tough from a dig ,but i got 315/35 BFG drags on the way for summer.
