EDIT - But your right, he did respond. It probably was an SRT - most stock neons wouldn't have picked the fight.

Whats up Fellas. I was surfing up on some info on 1/4 mile drag times for a Dodge Neon and I came across this post somehow, anyhow I just wanted to let you all know that not all Neon's were made dog slow!
Slower than a Stang tho im sure. How can a 4 banger compete with a v-8 car ? I don't understand how the one you raced was done at 90 mph. Musta been sick! I have had my 98 ACR Neon up to 137 mph hell if I am in a race and I really want the win I dont hit 4th gear till almost 90-95 mph. Thats shifting around 7000 rpm's.I can easily rev to 7400 rpms with my Computer. I can peg it in 4th grear at 120 mph hit 5th and keep on climbing till about 135-140 mph. (drag limited to 148 mph) so they say. The srt has (with stage 2) ran up to 158 mph.
1/4 mile times in the stock srt seem to be in the mid to high 13's depending on the driver.The stage 2 kit puts them at about 260-270 hp, up from 230 hp. With suspension upgrades and motor mounts I could see a stage 2 srt getting into the low 13's but not a 12.( maybe with a set of slicks).
My car with the N/A 2.0 DOHC and bolt on's probably runs in the high 14's low 15's where as the regular neons stock are running high 15's low 16's out of the box. And most are speed limited to 118 mph, ACR's like mine built for SCCA races were limited to 135 mph.When the ACRs first came out back in 95 or so you had to have an SCCA licence to even buy one. They came with Koni adjustable struts,4 wheel disk brakes no anti lock,and completely plain interior with no weight adding options like power anything. They had a 150 hp motor and weigh less than 2500 lbs.They also have a different final drive than say an SXT or a sport.
Now I hope all you v-8 mongers dont FLAME me for being a Neon owner ! LMAO.
I don't usually pick races with anyone but I never back off from one. I have not had a chance to race a Mustang but I have no problems beating v-6's,and v-8 trucks.From a stop or a roll. I eat the v-6's alive from the stoplight.( so far) Includeing an SHO Taurus v-6. I wont even talk of about the poor ol Pontiac Grand am g/t That shoulda stayed in the parking lot and saved his dignity.
The fastest car I have ever been in was 91 Mustang 5.0 with a Paxton supercharger, It scared the hell out of me in less than 1/4 mile. I loved it. Have fun with this and I hope I was able to inform you what the Neons were all about. PEACE OUT!

I drove a Neon (not an ACR) for 5 years, with the 2.0 DOHC no less, and it was indeed dog slow. Sorry, but I do have extensive (5 year's worth) experience on this particular subject. If it hit high 14's, even after weight reduction (ACR) I would die from shock. I think those cars are made for autocross, but that's very different from the kind of straight-line racing we're talking about here.
