Default 84 SVO needs a "BTM"?

So my SVO is at the shop and the mechanic told me that since the car has a couple of mods and upgraded turbo I would have to get a "BTM (Boost Timing Manager)" from MSD. He said that would be the only way too control th timing while boosting in order to protect detonation.

My question is what is the difference from having a boost controller and having this "BTM" the machanic told me about? Does any have one or ever heard anything about it?

Thanks for any advice/info.

Kick the mechanic in the *****.

No one has ever run that in a 2.3 turbo because every one tunes these cars untill they knock then take 2-3* timing out and they are good to go

So exactly would I take out these 2-3*? How exactly will I know when it knocks? I'm kinda new to these turbo stangs.

Timing - Turn the distributor

Knocks - sounds like rocks being flung around in a coffee can
