Default How are the 99' Cobras?

I just wanted to know how the 99' cobras are before I buy one. Is there a difference in the SVT and a cobra without SVT?
How many cobras were made in 99'? THANKS.

I can help you here... Kinda..

1) My certificate says 4040 were made.. Mine is #2690...
2) If its a COBRA then its a SVT.. No if, ands or buts about it..
3) The cars are great..

However, it depends on what you are looking to do in the long run.. If your looking for a car that isn't TOO expensive and yet quick you can pick up a 99 Cobra.. You can add some mods like gears, exhaust and other minor stuff to really make it come alive and beat alot of cars out there.. Not to mention you will look cool because your driving a Cobra..

On the down side I'll tell you my story.. I bought a 99 Cobra w/ 7k miles for $15,000.. I spend about $10,00 on some mods (rims, springs, tuner, dyno tune, cold air intake, 4.10s and tint).. Right now the car hooks up great, no wheel spin, no wheel hop, no nothing.. The car is matched perfect for launching and is pretty dam quick for a modest 297 WHP.. HOWEVER, I want more.. I spent another $5,500 on a supercharger (installed).. I'm going to be getting it back in the next day or so and was told to expect about 425 WHP.. Thats pretty good.. BUT, thats the limit to be on the 'safe' side.. I can go more but I risk causing harm to my motor that only has 10k miles on it.. Seeing I have an all aluninum motor I can't push it like 03/04s.. Now that I have about $25k into the car I could have found a used 03/04 Cobra, spent about that same $25k and added $1,500 for mods and would be pushing somewhere in the range of 460 WHP... See my delima?

Nonetheless.. I love my Cobra.. It looks good, its quick and its mine.. Thats just MY imput and I hope it helps..

P.S. Click on my link if you wanna see my Cobra going heads up against an 05GT with almost exact mods.. **Cough**Cough** Those things are quick.. [sm=boohoo.gif]

I don't know your financial situation, but I highly recommend you test drive a 99-01 Cobra and then drive an 03-04 Cobra. Like Twig said, in the long run, you may be better off buying a more potent 03-04 now than spending crap loads of money and coming up even or a little short.

i prefer the 99-01 cobras to the 03 cobras. i absolutly HATE the 03 cobras. because before 03 if you saw a cobra it was something rare. now they are making an unlimited amount of gt500 and the world is polluted with 03 cobras

Wow David, harsh words from you. I wouldn't think someone with an SVT Cobra would say the world is polluted with 03 Cobras. By the way, lets meet so you can smell the pollution from my 03 cobra!!!

i really enjoy my 99 cobra, i still am waiting to get it tuned but it is a fun car to drive, not crazy about the irs, i love the way that it handles but since i lowered it i need to get a rear alignment and i had to replace the wheel bearing from where the mechanic that replace my rearend reused the same wheel bearing nuts which loosened and wore the bearings out. I am going to get a irs brace and i believe that will stop the wheel hop or that is what everyone has said, if it does then i am never getting rid of this car.

I've had my '99 Cobra for 2 1/2 months and I love it. Test drove a '04 GT convertible and did not like the handling, but the '99 with the IRS is very nice in the corners. The combination of IRS and 32V aluminum DOHC engine makes for a sophisticated sports car, enough to make Honda and BMW owners shutup for a while. But it still has the muscle-car cool. In my opinion the '99-'01 Cobras are much more of a road-racing car than other Mustangs, along the lines of the '60's GT350 Shelbys. When Ford started adding superchargers to '03 and later Cobras this signaled less emphasis on road-racing and more emnphasis on traditional muscle-car desirablility - raw power and Friday night drags. I've started racing my Cobra in SCCA autocross events and the stock naturally aspirated engine has more than enough power to have a big affect on how gently the throttle must be applied in the corners. At my most recent event there was another '99 Cobra and the announcer kept complementing on how well our cars cornered for something with "a solid rear axle" not realizing we both had IRS. The other '99 Cobra was modified with most of the '00 Cobra R suspension and brake parts and he just kicked the butt off the Corvettes.

Others have recommended test driving a supercharged '03-'04 first. I second that advice. If after the test drive you still can't decide ask yourself this. Which classic 1960's Shelby would your prefer: the GT350 which was a well balanced road racer, or the GT500 which had more raw power? If the answer is the GT350 than you'll probably prefer the '99 Cobra over a '03-'04. Plus, the lower hp will yield lower insurance rates.

my 99 cobra drives amazing, ive never driven a terminator but they seem like nice cars. You should definatley test drive both and then take a look at your check book and say hi to a 03-04 which just sits there and is fast or a 99 cobra that you can make fast and have fun with. NOT TO MENTION INSURANCE RATES

I have an 01, basically the same as the 99, jsut some minor cosmentic stuff. I was in the market for a Cobra for quiet some time and I had the chance to test drive both an 03/and my 01. for Sheer overbearing power, push you back into your seat, run with anything on the block, right out of the box, You may want the 03/04, but well maintained examples are $$$$$. You can say I settled for my 01, but I absolutely love my 01 Cobra. 320HP is nothing to sneez at. You still get a potent and pwerful vehicle for a little less $$$. I think that you will be satisfied with either, the Cobra period is a bad @$$ car. Good luck in your search.
