Default Play in steering wheel

I was wondeirng if anyone knows how to fix this. I have some play in the steering wheel, I would say about an 1/2 inch, where I can turn the steering wheel left or right before anything happens, It's annoying. Is this somthing thats easy to fix?

I have an 01. I am on vacation this week and I am kicking around the idea of taking the steering wheel off. But I wanted to see if anybody has fixed this issue on thier own. Or if this is a common easy fix. I've been dealing with it for about two months but it is kinda of annoying espcially when I am just crusing at hwy speed, i have to make constant minor steering adjusments. I just recently got new springs and shocks, so I got the car aligned, I thought the alignment would fix the issue but it did'nt.
