Default grinding

I have a question, I live in colorado and it's starting to get really cold every morning on the way to work when it's cold every time I shift it grinds and colder it is worse the grinding. I know its not me not shifting right because once I start driving for a while it doesn't grind anymore. The only wayI can stop it from grinding is double clutching. Also whenI shift no matter the tempertureit's kind of difficult to shift,I really have to pull on the shifter to get it into gear. So my question is, isthere something wrong with my clutch or is it thetransmission? My guess is that the clutch is starting to go.I got the car used a few months ago it's a 1997 cobra and it has 75,000 miles on it andIhave no idea about thehistory of the car becauseI got it from a dealer, everything elseseems to be fine except for the clutch.Antoher question is how longdo clutches usally last and how much are they to replace?

Thanks for the help.

Doesn't sound like the clutch is going out, it sounds like the synchros are. You have a T-45, so it's not surprising. With my 97 I can shift fast enough to grind anytime if I shift really hard, and when it's cold, if I shift fast pretty fast (not like racing, but just quick shifting) it'll do it until the transmission is warmed up. The worse your synchros are the slower they are going to be, especially when cold.

Yeah, that's true, that's a good thing to check before your think the tranny itself is bad.

I would check the fluid level/condition and change it if it needs to be. I changed mine to Redline D4 ATF and the shifts smoothed out a lot and when cold it doesn't fell as rough or even grind anymore; I have the T-3650 in my 01 Cobra though. But w/ your trans, the grinding is common. My 96 ground like a mother when it was cold but smoothed out when it warmed up, that's just how they are...

yeah if you have to double clutch, then put money on the synchros being worn. BUT, dont jump the gun if you can do something as simple as change/check the fluid and fix it!

It's a typical Ford problem.

There is no real solution to it. If your transmission doesn't grind when it is warm, it's likely fine.

thanks for the info guys I'm going to check out the transmission fluid when i get off work. If it is not the fluid and it is the synchros how much would that be to fix?

thanks for the help again.
