265/45/17 for up front will match to 295/40/17 I wouldn't go any wider than 295 on stock rims

Wider tires don't actually improve traction and reduce wheel spinning, but rather, they're better for handling and cornering. As a result, if you're looking to gain traction, it's probably better to not go with the widest wheels you can find. Instead, find a wheel with a high stickiness rating.

What are you talking about?? Wider tires improve traction. There's more rubber on the ground. Plain and simple. Now a 315/35 tire on a 8" rim will not improve traction because it will be rounded out because it's being squeezed on the bead area. Wider tires don't improve handling. They actually hurt handling. If you knew anything about autocrossing, most guys use 245/45/17's. Max size of 275/40/17. You will never see anything wider on a mustang! They are paired in sizes, never staggered either.
This guy wants DR's which will be much improved over any street tire. DR's suck on handling too as they are soft sidewalled

Wider wheels would give better traction but wheels and tires arent cheap.Just get Better tires.

i have the smae rims as you, most peole like the way the 315 nittos looks on them, meaty but not bulging over the edge. i also have stock width tires up front.keep in mind the nittos run narrower than other tires for some reason.

Might sound like a dumb question, but is it worth it to go with wider direction treads on the back even though you won't be able to rotate them?

If you put anything bigger than a 275 on a stock tire it'll wear funny. Even w/ my 275's set at the proper pressure on my stock wheels the middles of my rear tires were wearing out faster than the outsides. So I have to set them to like 24 PSI, now they wear fine. Get a 275 Mickey Thompson DR and call it a day. Those things are like glue when they're warmed up!
