Default racing on a budget

looking to get into racing on a budget. I'm sure most guys start out the same way and work their way up with time, money, and experience.

For now I'm just looking to build something to take to the local track and smoke all the Nissan low-riders, and go from there.

What's a good year Mustang to start with that has the most bang for the buck? Any tips or starting points from you veterans for putting together a track-ready car for under 10 grand would be much appreciated.

well there a few things you can do.. buy something like that above thats race ready... personally (no offense BOB..) im not into buying other peoples projects... you can buy a foxbody rolling chasis with suspension and rollcage, then insert a stalled motor with a big block motor in it... or you can do something like a SN95 Cobra... and build the motor and spray and blow the thing to hell... and it won't cost you to much...

10grand is a little bit of money like you said... but how fast do you really wanna go in the 1/4 or 1/8th? I mean you can get a stock SN95 Cobra really put some slicks, full suspension, 4.56 gears and a built stalled tranny in there.. and probably run real low times... and that's cheap also... depends on what you really want to build... Personally, I like the stalled Cobra idea the best... not to heavy, a lot of power and the suspension gets a lot of it to the ground... There's a mach 1 around tampa that runs that basic pack with 4.30's and runs mid or low 12's..

Yea,

Nothing against the FE -- but "budget" and "FE" should not really be in the same sentence.

I've made a stock short block 90 hatchback go 13.15 on drag radials with very simple bolt ons, stock cam! stock short block!

with slicks it easily would have been in the 12s, and that was with only 3.55 gears, full interior, all the power accessories - and the AC WORKED GREAT!

There's no surprise why those cars took over the aftermarket starting in the mid 80's.

I would recomend a fairmont if you can find one in good shape - they are different- just as light- and all the mechanicals fit from a fox mustang.

I would also recomend going with a carb- I raced EFI - and it's just plain cheaper to go with a carb.

The roller 302's from 89 -93 are a great foundation - you already have a roller cam block, forged pistons, rods and crank, the shortblock is nearly bullet proof - a set of AFR heads, good cam, carefull rebuild, RPM or victor intake - 650ish carb, 3.73 or 4.10 gears in the 8.8 with a traclock, a good set of slicks, southside machine lower bars, adjustable uppers, maybe an air bag on the passenger side -- and you're into the 11's with less than $4000 invested.... it's been done lots and lots of times.

there is also a HUGE market of used parts for these cars-

sorry - but I've built a fox mustang that was dependable as an every day driver and almost hit the 12s for about the same money as some guys spend to build an FE --- facts is facts.

But I'm still building a stroked 428 for my 69 mustang!

The Fox's definatly aren't a bad idea - when I was toying around with the idea of getting another Mustang, I was going to get one and just build it... trouble with it, is finding a car like that, lol... most of the foxes out there are molested and need motor work done, or a new one. Like I said, and you already know.. it's all about how fast you want to go in the end.

I have never heard of any 302 foxbody having a forged bottom end... if you want a 11-12 second car for under 10k... go buy a rolling chasis with built suspension... go buy a built crate motor and auto tranny with a stall and juice the hell out of it, lol...

I mean hell, you can find a Rolling chasis w/suspension that just needs a motor and tranny for 2-3k most places w/cage even... then just go buy a big block ford with a auto stalled tranny.. and you'll be set with a nice shot of gas...

Could also buy the SN95 Cobra I was referring to for 6k in some places... build suspension (with gears), tranny, and put a small nitrous shot on it, and run the same times... but, you have to watch out then you run risk of blowing your motor... Building the motor would put you a bit over 10k, lol... I mean, if you can get a 280rwhp car, with a 5k launch on a stalled auto with a 150 shot of nitrous you'll be in very good shape with some 4.56 gears (8th), or some 4.30's for the qtr.
