I would do 18's all the way around. especially if you want to skip that irs bolt headache.
but if you do 17's all the way around with 10.5 outback, you can either A) Grind Stock Bolt or B) Purchase Aftermarket IRS Bolt [rounded head], and if you still don't clear, I would get some spacers.
When I put rims on my car I wanna do the same thing 9x17 fronts and 10.5x18 rear. Several cars come nowadays with different rim diameters and widths making them where you cant rotate the tires. I like the look myself
Be carefull going large variances between front and rear diameter tires, as you will cause issues with your drivabilty. Your ABS brakes can kick-in too easily if it measures great differences between rotational speeds. It is OK to go larger/smaller all-around, but be carefull going staggered diameter.
