Need inspiration
Im not blaming it on my wife because i should have been checking her oil. I have a 98 cobra with 40k and it got down to about 3 and a half quarts. And now there is a very loud rapping at the top of the rev. I have had several mechanical people look at it and listen to it. (we are not driving it) and every one says it sounds like a rod bearing. The car has good compression and will run fine just noisy. I am debating wether to put it in the shop and pay to have it fixed back to stock OR do it in my garage and just get into the motor. I do know that with a possible rod bearing it could also have damaged the crank bearings and or rod and piston. Which is why maybe doing it in the garage is better because if its real bad then i could just do complete repairs myself and not break the bank. If anyone else has been in a similiar place with low oil and loud noises please respond. Any advice or comments are appreciated!! Also is this the type of car that the motor has to be taken out of the bottom????

The only thing that I would say is this...
If you have the know how to do it, and it's not time sensitive to get it up and running - do it yourself... If you're not comfortable doing it yourself... then don't. You don't want to create more problems if you're not sure with what you're doing.

^ He's right, even if you knew somewhat, I'd get a repair manual to help you along with step by step processes. If you have the basic knowledge of the motor and hand tools you should be able to pull it off if you use a repair manual.
