98 Cobra "To buy or not to buy" help with engine
I'm looking at a 98 Cobra. The BIGGIE is that it has a knock when you rev it up, but little or no noise at idle. My guess is that its a rod bearing, but don't know if the damage is limited only to that. So, I need some advice on what to expect as I'm not that great on Modular engines. I can buy the car for 3500 and the body is in great shape but am concerned about the fix it back cost. Thanks for your help.

its a rod most likely. Thats what was wrong with mine. Ford offers a rebuilt engine for ur car for $4200 with a 3 year warranty. If you dont mind a stock engine . If you want more power $5-6 k for a good build. The car in good shape is worth $7-8k

If the body is in good condition, interior, transmission, etc... while 3500 might be a tad high, considering if the motor was in good shape it's only worth about 7500-9000 right now... tops... it's not a "bad" deal imo... why buy a brand new motor though? Why not just tear it down and rebuild/forge it?
The motor costs 4200, and install is going to be just as expensive unless YOU know how to fix it.. in that case... I buy the new parts and make the motor that much better...

I can rebuild the engine. Don't the Cobra engine have forged internals already? If not, I priced a kit from Shawn Hyland for $1999, rods, pistons, crank, bearings etc. The body is in excellent shape and shows no sign of damage or repair and the interior only has a tear in the drivers seat (but is severe enough to warrent a replacment), otherwise the rest of the car looks very good, I have looked for a replacment leather seat cover but have been unable to locate one. Ideas? I would also replace the clutch while the engine was out. Luckily I have a lift and believe this engine can be dropped out the bottom. Any other things I need to know about or check for before I confirm the deal?

The only Cobras that have a forged motor is the 2003-2004 Cobra; every other year does not.
Since you have the mechanical know how - I would just rebuild the thing with forged parts. I mean you can pick up pretty decent parts for the same price if not much cheaper then a new motor with the same crappy internals... and the car would be much faster... as long as the block is ok at least; but I doubt there would be damage to the engine block itself.
You can check www.buyfordracing.com for somethings - see if you can grab anything from them cheaply to use. They normally have good prices on some replacement stuff from Ford... and Ford Racing.
