97 Cobra "chirping/sqweaking" sound
Hey guys, new to the site, looks nice.
Anyway my car is making what sounds like a belt sqweaking/chirping noise at idle for the first 10 mins or so...then only does it under higher rps, 3-4k once warmed up. But when I go to listen to it under the hood the sound doesnt seem to come from around the belt or pulleys etc up front, sounds like its back more towards the middle of the motor. Is this a common problem with these cars that im not aware of?
Also...could someone inform me on how to look up all the recalls and common problems with this model car etc? Thx very much

could be a valve tapping, have you ran low on oil?
grab a broom stick, and place it against the valve cover and put your ear on the other end, the valve sound resonates through the wood and you'll hear if its tapping.

Hey MAD, thx for the replies,
No oil and everything seems ok, sounds more like a belt sqweal and a light pulley chirp mixed, but doesnt seem to be comming from the belt, weird. It sounded more like it was down low towards the front when I listened to it again last night.

maybe its one of the accessories that the belt is spinning??? alternator, water pump.... hmmmm could just be a bearing on one of the idlers.
ok heres the plan..... drive it to cali... this is driving me nuts! I WANNA FIX IT!!

Yea thats what im hoping, just an accessory noise instead of a motor noise. Heres some more info...it's only got 22k miles, very lightly driven over the last 10 years...sat for some lengthy periods at times, a few times over a couple years or so. Also it doesnt seem to be doing it now at start up, drove it to work this morning (a 5 min drive)...revved it to 3-4k rpm and didnt hear the noise. Was about 40 degrees this morning, just now drove home (65 degrees) ran a few errands and car started making the noise again around 3-4k+ and it does it also when just holding it steading at 3-4k rpm. Buddy at work said might be the A/C clutch or something. Watcha think?
