Oil cooler leaking...
After many months of confusion, I've learned that my oil cooler assembly is leaking out of a "weep" hole in it from the factory. 99 Cobra by the way. Here's what nobody can seem to tell me, Why is it leaking? I would just replace it, but the part is freakin' $410 from ford and only a little cheaper elsewhere, AND there's no guarantee that'll fix it. The dealer says they've never heard of the issue. I could take it off and have it tigged shut, but if the hole is there for a reason, then I figure I better find out what the issue is first. Any ideas? I'm at a loss at this point. I'm about to give up. Here is the part number for the exact part that leaks. F8ZZ6A642BA. I just need to know why the weep hole is releasing oil, and what I can do to fix it, or what happens when I just plug the hole. One more tidbit of info, this hole was plugged up when I bought the car unannounced to me. So I drove it over 500+ miles before the patch let loose with no issues.
hmmm thats interesting i have never seen a weap hole there is an o-ring that is between the oil cooler and oil cooler adapter...those go out alot everyone of my buddys had to replace theres not to mention hearing bout many others...im curious if its just the o-ring leaking and making it seem like its coming from a hole?
There was another memeber a few months back with the same issue, it was infact a weep oil that was leaking oil out from the bottom of the housing. I also replaced mine, which was only a seal, cause I was told by ford the seal wasn't replaceable which was in fact a lie. But if its OIL leaking from the weep oil I would replace the unit, if the seal was bad it would be leaking from the seal I would imagine. Weep holes are designed for a reason, just like a water pump. If fluid comes out of the weep hole that usually indicated internal damage, bearing play, or something similar.
I do believe i am having the same problem in my 96, it is leaking from the hole, and from the adapter behind it. Its possible i thought it was coming from the whole when it was lightly leaking from behind it. So once i take the engine out, i assume my new engine won't come with another one, you suggest plugging the hole is a bad idea? i can replace the o-ring... not a problem.
Don't plug it. If it's coming out of the hole, there's something wrong. All I did was take the oil filter off, get a .5 inch hex head socket and ratchet and tighten the shaft that the oil filter screws onto. Done. No more leak. The weep hole was just letting me know something was wrong. Hasn't leaked again since.
