Timing question - rebuilding
Hi all,
first off, I haven't been around my engine in a while now (thought I could take on a rebuild without space and while going to college... fail) so now getting my *** in gear and I have installed the oil pump and need to time. I think I have the sprockets where they should be but then during my research I found somewhere that said I had to rotate my crank 45 degrees then time. At the moment the dots on the head sprockets are to the diagonal corners and the crankshaft is center bottom.
I recall having to rotate because I bought a degree wheel but rotating it doesn't make sense.
Can someone give me some material on timing or chime in. When I get home tonight i'll be able to take some pictures of where I'm at.
Thanks!

You probably already figured it out but, rotating it 45 from Top Dead Center will put you in safe mode, which means that all the pistons are far enough down that they wont contact any valves. I am not sure if this is the right way to do it or not but i put the head on first without the camshaft then placed the camshaft on with the sprocket. Next I put the chain on (not Tensioned) and then I tightened the camshaft caps to spec. then tensioned the chain, then tightened the sprockets to spec. After that make sure you turn it a few times (at least twice) to make sure that the valves a pistons aren't hitting. I know that that was kinda general and not very specific but you probably already figured it all out. If not I will be happy to give you more info on how I did the timing.
