Default '97 speedo

I have a 97 svt, w/74000 miles on it and the speedometer has quit working. If you smack on the dash, it will work for 6/10ths of a mile, then stop. Just wondering if anyone else has this problem. The local Ford dealer says they can't get those units, but they can send them out to repair, but it takes around 6 wks, or so. Also, I really don't want to start out with 0 miles. Anyone got any tips on how to repair this, w/o resetting the mileage on it. Thanks in advance.

it's probably the speedo gears in the instrument panel. Mine did the same thing... I ordered replacements (can't remember where) and pulled the instrument panel ans replaced them myself. Very easy to do.

also seems like the dash rather then the speedo gear in the tranny...do some google searches and find something after market maybe american muscle or 50resto??

the gauge cluster is real easy to take off so i wouldnt drop a few hundred dollars taking it to ford if i were you lol

Thanks for all the tips and especially the link to the how to article. Going to order those gears, and pull it all apart. Hopefully it works. Thanks to all again.
