96 snake vs 99 snake
First off, Assuming What you say about stockness is correct, the factory 99 cobra puts out approximately 320hp and the 96 305hp. This is also assuming the 99 had recall fix done (also note not all 99s were affected noticeably). They say the fix is worth5 to 25 rwhp (5.8 to 29 Flywheel hp assuming 16% drivetrain power loss). So lets just say the 99 had the fix for sake of argument. In stock form, The curb weight of a 99 vert is Approximately 3,560lbs give or take 10 pounds. This is also assuming the car is in exact stock form (stock tires wheels or anything that might change the weight). A factory 96 Coupe weights approximately 3,391lbs give or take 10 also. Thats a difference of 169lbs Not counting driver. That can make all the difference in the world, and its got to be worth atleast .3-.8of a second in 1/4mile et times and 2-5mph in trap speeds. Not to mention the aerodynamics, the 96 being more aerodynamic (the sn95 bodystyle has been top speed tested and was significantly more aerodynamic than the 99+ bodystyle) not that it would make that much difference in the 1/4 mile.U say the 96 has exhaust and a chip. Chips don't really do squat for any post 95 cobras because they are generally tuned for premium fuel and a more aggressive driver front the factory, but lets give it the benefit of the doubt and say 10 flywheel hp (8.4rwhp again assuming 16% drivetrain power loss). Exhaust, a good open offroad exhaust is probably worth a good 20-45 flywheel hp (16.8 to37.8 Rwhp). So for the 96 Thats approximately360 flywheel hp at best and 335 at worst. And thats302.4 rwhp at best and 281.4rwhp at worst. The 99 is about 268.8rwhp approximately (don't forget because of the 99's new intake\head\ignition combo thatsmore efficient hp). Thats a difference of approx 40 flywheel hp at best and 15 flywhp at worst(which translates into 12.6 - 33.6 Rwhp) Difference. Thats a significant difference. So next we look at traction, The 99's irs has been looked down upon since its arrival (wheel hop and vulnerable axle half shafts). The 96 uses a solid rear axel, which for the most part gets significantly better\consistant traction with less wheel hop.Yet on the other hand the 99' uses a larger clutch (11")with an increased holding capacity, whichenables a better launch (eliminating spinning and wheelhop). The 96 uses the old (10.5"), which isn't really all that inferior or anything but everything little bit makes a difference. So all in all, I would say it would be a good race. I'm gonna have to go with the 96 if for no other reason the difference in weight between the two. This is all assuming the drivers are of equal talent, because a driver can make a total night and day difference. This isn't flaming 99's or anything, this is just simply my oppinnion with a little data to back it up. And yes i'm a 96 Owner!Hope this helps you and answers some questions.

Im going to have to say the driver will win this battle. It also depends on how the egines run when they come from the factory. Some cars were 20 hp under other cars with the same parts right from the begining.

coupe versus vert... stock versus mild mod... power output is probably real close, so i believe the weight would be a factor. i would say the 96 with exhaust would pull
