Default help with rear end noise

i own a 2002 mustang 3.8L with an automatic transmission the car has 43000 miles on it. about 4 weeks ago my car started to make a whining noise so i put it on jack stands and it sounds like it's coming from the rear end. i took it to a mechanic and he said the carrier bearing needed replaced i then spoke to another mechanic at ford who said that my car does not have a carrier bearing. so now i dont know if i should take it to the first mechanic to have it fixed or not. The noise gets higher pitched the faster you go and it does not change when you swerve or punch the gas and it seems to be the loudest at about 35 mph. I checked the fluid in the rear end and seemed to be ok. Any suggestions?

Good time to get some gears and a T-Lok. You pretty much need to replace the bearings when you get that mod done anyway. Why not just do it all at once?

im kind of on a tight budget how much do you think that would cost and what would be the advantages?

You dont have a carrier bearing. The first mechanic is a dipschit.

gears and t-lok would be anywhere from $350-400 not including the install, and if your really tight id get a speed-cal to recalibrate the speedo, a set of 4.10s and a t-lok will knock a bit off your acceleration time but on the highway you will loose around 2-4 mpg depending on how you drive
