Default fuel gauge

i had a little more than a quarter of a tank left in my car and i went to a friends house who live about a mile away from me. when i leave, i start my car and notice my fuel gauge is way bellow empty and my low fuel light is on. my car runs like it still has fuel. and it seemed fine for the 1 mile i drove it. this all happened about 10 min. ago so i havent had a chance to look at anything yet. any ideas?

I've noticed the same problem if I park on an unlevel suface. When I start back up, the gauge reads wrong, until I start it back up on a level surface.
