Default 98 fuel filter

Okay its time for you all to have a good laugh at me .....but I have a 98 mustang and having trouble starting it ......well it cranks over a few times prior to starting I should say .....replaced airfilter and strongly suspect its the fuel filter ........so i go down to Checkers and they say i have to use this special little tool thats also used for the ac connections .....Well I tried my hardest to open the connections on each side of the fuel filter with no success.......I now read in the repair manual that I think I have been given the wrong tool for the job as my connection looks nothing like the spring lock coupling ...............Anyone else have any experience with this .....or Iam I just unable to use my tool in the correct manner ??
