Default New guy here (got a 98 3.8)

So I just bought my first car. I got a 1998 3.8l Mustang (duh). Now I've never personally modded cars before. but I've helped my friends, and also my grandpa and I uncle who I do/did live with are both mechanics. My grandpa working for Ford for 40 years and my Uncle working for a Chevy body shop for quite some time, and also modding his own cars. So I feel I have capable help, but I just want to know What can be done to give my car some more *****. I know (now) that the 98 isn't the fastest v6 by any means but it's to late to regret that.

So if anyone could provide a list of mods/replacement that could get the HP up I'd appreciate it. I asked over onthe IGN forums but got nothing but poeple telling me I'm dumb for buying a v6. Also I need to replace the shocks/springs which would you recommend?

Price isn't really an object atm since I'm going to try and work a lot of overtime in the near future.

You can do a splitport swap; which will net you apox 40 HP (Head, Intake & cam). If your feeling really froggy port and polish it for some sweet gains!

Good luck

Theres a guy on ebay selling the stuff now to do the swap..

no need for a splitport swap. singleport heads can be ported to flow as good as ported splitport heads.

ported heads/cam/ported intakes/2.5" true dual exhaust/3.73 or 4.10 gears will wake up that 3.8

power adders: 100shot of Nitrous or 11psi procharger or turbo kit from www.tmaturbo.com

for cams pistons heads intakes and much more try www.rpm-mustangs.com
for tuning go to www.vmptuning.com

for good tech support try www.3.8mustang.com or www.v6power.net

dont be discouraged by having a 3.8 V6 mustang.
the 3.8 ford was copied off of the Buick 3.8 (231) which was used in the Grand National. Ford eliminated some deficiencies that the buick has and used aluminum heads that flow pretty good and have a much better rocker design then the buick.

whatever you can do to a Buick you can do to the ford with similar or better results

I don't have the exact flow #s as of yet I'll have them shortly (my buddy works on fuel mgt @ Ford) but.. they aren't even close. The splitport swap is not for the faint hearted but will yield greater results then merly P&P single port setup.

dude c'mon. i've been around 3.8's for along time. supersix ported singleport heads are almost identical in flow to their ported splitport heads. stock, yeah the splitport flows better

super six superheads flow
splitport 260cfm intake 170 cfm exh

singleport 240cfm intake 181cfm exh

not much difference there.

the fastest essex V6 out there right now is a singleport. there is no need for a splitport swap. it costs almost as much to do a splitport swap with stock splitport heads as it does to gets a set of ported RPM singleport heads that will out flow the stock splitports by far

Note, the split port swap will cost a pretty fair amount of cash, but just don't do a swap, do a cam swap along with upgrading your fuel injectors and porting out the upper/lower intake, you'll gain quite a bit more hp doing it that way.

Is there a good book, or article or something that can help me get familiar with the mustang engine?
