shift point (need help)
hows it going. A friend of mine just bought a '98 stang in great condition. Its his first car and is fairly new at driving a 5 speed. He knows how to and all, just doesn't have a lot of experience. Anyhow, him and I are gonna go up to the strip and run our cars (his '98 stang, my '01 z06) for the fun of it.

Anyhow, on the stang the redline is a bit confusing. On every car I've seen there has only been solid red, or yellow/orange and then red. Anyhow, on the stang its first I think 1000 rpms in thin red lines and then solid red. Wanted to find out where actual redline "shift when drag racing"point is. before red lines, or before the actual red. Im sure it SOUNDS confusing, but you guys should know what I mean..

thanks for the help,

that is beacouse the motor can rev to 5500, but due to factory settings, it really doesnt make any power past 4200. so that is why the have the "red line set like that, because since the motor makes no power past 4200, theres no point in revving it so high. the stock rev limiter will cut ya off at 5225. a chip will fix this, and allow the motor to make power all the way up to the rev limiter, or, if you really want to rev it higher, you can take care of that with a chip also. but i donot reccomend this cuz it will really cut down on the life of the motor if your not careful. ideal shift points on a stock 6er is about 4200 rpms, and he should finish at the end of the track in third just tickling the redline at about 85 mph. this is just based on my experience at the track/dyno.
