I think you're talking about the sn95 mustangs, the sn95 edge GTs and V6s had no problems hangine with their Z-28 and Camaro V6 counterparts. Point is the Camaro costed more, don't care what you say, but doesn't look as good, interior or exterior as a stang, and had a few more mechanical issues that made the stang the much better buy.

a 99 z28 would CRUSH a 99 GT. its pretty much a full second faster than us.

but yeah i agree though, ford just downplayed the v6 to A. cheapen cost and B. not be close to the level of a GT. what would be the point of getting a GT only to have the v6 able to keep up with it for much cheaper? its all about the dough. ford was outselling the fbodies so they didnt bother to change the power because they figured if its selling then it goes back to the old saying of "if it aint broke, dont fix it"

the V6 is a base engine because Ford Heritage has roots with V8 development back in 1932. it has always been one of their milestones. if ford would have turbo'd the 3.8 back in the 80's the 5.0 would have faded into obselence and the Buick GN would not have the cult status that it enjoys today. for didn't want to out compete it's own V8 with a V6 of a better design.

when the SN 95 was being developed ford had a testmule car with a T-bird SC engine in it. it beat the 5.0 in every performance test. Ford still banked all of it's marketing on the V8.

it's a shame that so many uneducated people out there thinks a V8 is superior to anything else and sounds ricey if it doesn't sound like a V8.

the 3.8 essex is probably one of the greatest engines that never was
So would this explain why Buicks turbo V6 never made it into the Camaro and instead GM lowered the performance of the 3800 to give glory to the almighty V8? Sounds like Ford and GM were in the same game to protect the V8.
well the turbo buick did make it's way into the F-body in 1989 they used left over GN engines fitted with FWD 3800 heads in the 89 turbo TA. these cars were known to run low 13's right off the showroom floor.

GM really never lowered the performance of the 3800 NA engine. it actually gained power and was refined along the way. they dropped the turbo but came out with th M-62 supercharged series I then the M-90 series II. GM more of embraced the V6 as a good across the board engine. it replaced the 305 in the last gen F-body. the LT-1 and the LS1 were so much more powerfull that the 3800 would no compete with it but it was a good small V8 replacement.

Ford however kept the 3.8 as a base only engine which is a shame because it had so much potential.

imagine what a 4.2L DOHC V6 based on the essex would run like. why ford ever decided to use the Cologne 4.0L 60 degree block to make OHC is beyond me. the 90 degree 4.2L could have been redesigned to be a SOHC 4.2 and have enough room to make a DOHC too

a DOHC 4.2 would most likely make 300-310hp. it will never fail to amaze me on the goofy decisions that ford makes

Well all I can say is quit your whinning about the slow V6s guys, becuase the new Shelbys are gonna be far from it, and in 09 Ford is finally planning to release a S/C 3.5L V6 that's gonna be fast enough to own edge GTs. So we'll finally see how well hp sells in times of high gas prices.

Youre right. There is no point in whinnig about something that could of been but wasnt. But its something that should be known.
