Default gears?

Hopefully I am not posting this in the wrong section or asking for info that has already posted somewhere else, but here goes.
I was looking at buying gears for my next mod but there is only one problem, I don't know what the hell they are used for our how to install them.
I have a 01 auto v6, and if it matters have magnaflow cats, mac cai, underdrive pulleys, stang wires. Would the 4:10 gears be a good next buy?
And can I get some info on what they do/are, and how easy they are to install. What is the pros and cons of 4:10 v. 3.73?
I was thinking about buying the ones off of american muscle...
http://www.americanmuscle.com/v6gears.html
Again I apologize if this information is all over the site, but I searched and can't find any help. Thanks!!

gears would be a great next mod. you cant install them yourself though. at least its not reccomended. you have to really know what your doin. the go in the rear end. i would also get a lsd of some sort to go with those to help out with traction. lsd=limited slip differential.

Thanks for the reply, but what do the gears do exactly? How much do they cost to get installed? And what is the difference between the 4:10, 3:73?

you have stock gears in your car right now that are maybe 2.73, or even 3.23, so if you move up to 4.10, then your rpms gain faster. The bigger the gears you get, i.e 4.10 over 3.73, the faster you get your rpms into your powerband which allows you to gain speed faster. It doesnt give you ANY extra hp, but it does help with acceleration and drops off about 3 mph off of your top end speed.

ive heard around 300 bucks. plus youll need a tuner to fix your spedo because it will be way off. thats another 400 bucks.

getting a higher ratio of gears causes the driveshaft to turn more revs per rotation of the rear axle. this causes your car to reach higher rpms faster thus improving acceleration..but they do NOT increase hp. i dont have experience with either the 3.73 or 4.10s but i know i will be getting 4.10s when i can afford gears.

edit: damnit you kinda beat me to it....

Man that's gonna wind up running me a lot more money than I had expected. Any opinions on if it is worth it?

Gears are def a good mod for you. Since you have a new edge stang, Id say go with the 4.10s. The new edges have 3.27s in them stock, so IMO, going up to 3.73 isnt worth it. Everything included, expect to spend about a grand. Thats for the gears, install kit, lsd (if you get a t-lok), tuner and install. Granted thats just a rough estimate, but its a ball park figure for you to go by. And keep in mind that if you decide to get a better lsd like a detroit true trac, its gonna cost you about 200 more than the t-lok will. But all the basics to do the job completely will cost about a grand.

You definitely dont need a tuner, so you can scratch that $400. You can just get a speedo calibration from a shop for like $50.

ford t-lok for 7.5 in. rear end from v6mustangstuff.com -$199.99+shipping
or detroit truetrac -stronger than tlok- drivetrainspecialists.com -$431.99+shipping

total w/o shipping for lsd with diablo and ford t-lok $748.94
total w/o shipping for lsd with diablo and truetrac $980.94
total w/o shipping for lsd with sct and ford t-lok $777.13

all that should be pretty darn close to exactly what your going to pay. all that plus install wich will probably run about $300

edit: oh and if you are a stick shift then you can get an electric speed calibrator but you cant get one for an auto unless is a 94-98. those are $99 from americanmuscle.com
