If you really wanna clean the whole thing and make it nice, take it to a shop, have them tear it down, hot tank the block, and beadblast parts with any residue and crap on it. That'll look real nice.

Yeah, you usually won't do that unless your overhauling the whole engine. But still a nice output as opposed to cleaning it while it's in the car.

Just spray it down at a DIYer. I spray my engine off everytime i clean my car, and it runs like a champ. Looks great too. It wont hurt anything.
