Default 2nd Gear is worthless

Maybe its just me, but if I want to drive like a normal person, take 90 degree corners at 10-15 mph, I have to downshift to 1st to get any decent acceleration out of the corner. My 2nd gear just has no acceleration until I get close to 2500, then it starts to get some power. I've driven other cars, and they can all take corners in 2nd, and come out of the turn with some decent power, but not this mustang. I looked at the gear ratios, and it seems 2nd gear, plus the Final Drive is probably whats hurting me on that, as it is too short for driving slow.

My question, is would putting in 3.73 or 4.10 gears in the rear end help that, since it would have a higher ratio? If so, would I have to reflash the ecu to get the speedometer correct? I've read that driving with them, and the stock open differential is retardedly difficult, but if I'm not racing, would it make much difference? I'm selling this car tentatively in about 4-6 years from now, when I'm most of the way through college, to buy a faster car, so would it be worth it?

I take corners in 2nd all tha time in mine and get plenty of pull. It all depends on how fast ur going as ur going into the turn. 10-15 is 1st gear speed so dont expect to see much pull as u go into 2nd...so basically...the faster ur going, the more pull ull have when you downshift...just dont kill ur engine.

I just dont' like that though, it bothers me. I drove a 300ZX, and it pulled in 2nd easily at 15mph. it doesn't even have as much torque, and there was a misfiring cylinder.

maybe your deffinition of driving like a normal person and mine are different, i start off in second and have no problem

if you have a 99-04 then yes you need to reflash the eCU talk to justin at vmptuning.com

mpsautosalvage.com has used 3.73s for $50

get a detroit true trac from drivetrainspecialists.com or even a ford trash-lok lsd as well, you will also need a bering kit

2nd gear works fine on my car. 2500 is above where i shift normally for any gear.

its a 98, so I guess it doesn't need to be reflashed?

My defnition of driving like a normal person probably wasn't the best way to say it, but for how I drive in traffic, I can't take a corner in 2nd and get accerleratoin suitable to my tastes, so I was thinking gears would fix that problem, by making the total gearing in 2nd gear a bit taller, and give better acceleration.
