reverse grinds???
hey i have a 2002 v6 5 speed mustang and when backing up it sound like a grinding noise but is in gear almost sounds like chattering? ANy one know why htis could happen or how to fix it?
There's nothing to worry about. Manual transmissions have two types of gears. Spur and helical. Spur gears have a straight cut tooth design. They're built stronger, and they're used for reverse. They make noise, whereas helical gears are cut at an angle in relation the the gear axis, which means they're much quieter, but not as strong as a spur gear. The noise you're hearing is perfectly normal.

put the car into 5th gear with the clutch still down to stop the rotation before you put it into reverse this will stop the grinding of the gears!

That damn reverse man, they did a weird job on making em. Sometimes if i go straight from manual to reverse i cant get it into Reverse even if i use all my force, yet if i go to fifth then reverse it slides right in. Also itll click into place yet still grind the gears every so often. Nothing TO major, its just weird how sometimes it wont let me go into reverse. (All from a dead stop, and with the clutch in all the way obviously)
