Default Stiff clutch!

Hi all,

Still on the hunt for my son a car. I have driven a 99 and a 2000 model as well a a 98. Both the 99 and the 2000 have very stiff clutch pedals. The 99 is not only stiff but very rough feeling. The 2000 just very stiff. Cars have about 90k miles on them. Was wondering if this is typical of the clutches in these year models or if cables are going south. The 98 was easier to press and the take up was much closer to the floor board. Any info would be appreciated here.

Thanks!

Mark

PS: Nearly slammed my foot through the floorboard when I got back in my F150! [sm=icon_rofl.gif]

Get your son the 00, and the clutch will put some hair on his chest. Real men kick hard clutches.

thats good..lol!

ihave driven a few stangs, and so far, most of them have harder clutches than the cars i have driven with clutches. if the clutch feels rough with the 99, stay away from it. IMO the 00' would be your best bet. ilove edges, they look better IMO. and they are faster.

The first thing I noticed when I got my 02 stang with 82k miles was that the clutch was really stiff...couple months later the pedal started rattling...couple months after that it started slipping and it continues to slip (until I can afford a new clutch). Thought I might let you know that a stiff clutch could be a sign of a clutch going bad.

Thanks for the useful information Torchred! I appreciate it. I'm guessing that perhaps you have priced a new clutch. If so, what can I expect to spend for a stock replacement?

i dont think that a stiff clutch means it needs replacing... all the mustang clutches (for those years, anyway) have very stiff clutches. When we were looking for cars, i was so used to our Jeeps clutch that i thought the mustang clutch was broken lol [sm=icon_rofl.gif]whenever i drive cars other than the stang with light clutchs i ALWAYS slam them down really hard for the first few shifts you'll get used to it eventually. Take it for a test drive to tell if the clutch is slipping or not.

if you can replace the clutch yourself you are looking at around $200, otherwise lasbor will be much higher

Yeah, I was quoted at around $800-$900 installed for a new clutch...which is a whole lot. I drove my roomate's mustang which is only a year newer than mine and the clutch is so easy to push down compared to mine...its the same one though.
