The PI is just as reliable as the NPI. It just has more power.

Its not worth switching out engines like this. I have asked the same question, and there would be too many parts to have to replace, among those the tranny, the computer, the rear end, wiring...etc...I thought about doing this as well on my 95 when the engine goes, but its not worth the hassle. The amt of money you would spend replacing parts, you could have a nice V8 already ready to go instead.

Alright let's hit on some things...

First, alot are talking about replacing the rear end. Make bigpower with a 3.8 and watch what happens to your diff. You'd need to replace it anyway. Tranny, too....and I'm pretty sure it's easier to find a bellhousing for a 4.6, but I'm not sure on that one. V-6 T-5scan barely take the torque load of a stock NPI.

Engine swaps are NOT bad ideas for just anyone. It depends on your situation. For example, my car ismy DD. Since major downtime's a no-go, pulling the motor out for a head swap or machine shop work just ain't gonna happen. SO, it makes more sense in terms of practicality for me to build an engine on the outside. Now if I'm going through the trouble of swapping, I sure as hell might as well put in a V8.

Cost. I dunno who the hell kicked up the idea that buying a GT is cheaper than doing a swap. This only applies if you don't already have a car. If you do, someone please explain to me how buying a GT of the same year and having two cars until you can sell oneis cheaper than swapping? If I were to put the money it would cost me to buy a 2000 GT into an engine/trans, I'd have some rediculous horsepower.

Parts needed. Alright, Engine/accessories(unless you're making a custom setup like me, this is easy to come upon for $800 or LESS), trans (no, a v6 trans will not survive it very long, under $400 and up used, depending on what you want), driveshaft (pfft, CHEAP, hell get a new aluminum one for $250), rear end(also easy as heck to find and not expensive at all), wiring harness/computer (can be bought NEW from FORD, of all people, for a few hundred, or gotten used if not bought with the motor), gauge cluster (lots of wicked customizationoptions here. Might also come with the motor), exhaust (like you're not buying new exhaust anyway). ..and that's not even factoring in the "hook up" factor. Among mustangs, EVERYONE'S selling parts, and someone always just happens to be selling what you're looking for. Just take your time and put the parts together.

Ah, and someone's gonna mention the PATS system. Yes, you can go to Ford and have this dealt with for not too much cash, especially if you're friends with guys who work there

the people saying buying a GT would be cheaper mean it'd be cheaper to SELL your v6 and BUY a GT of an earlier year. it'll about balance out. especially since you can get a 99+ GT for well under 10 grand now. hell.. i think i've seen 99s for about 7.

Pi or npi, just get yourself a reliable engine, preferbly from someone you personally know. I am weary of these online sites that sell wrecked cars engines and half of them tend to have " Only 2k miles!!" I believe most of them lie just to sell the engine quicker. If you have a npi lined up from a person you know, and the price is right go for it. If you can find a pi for a couple hundred more, and know its history go for it. The t-5 CAN hold the power if you drive your car normally, now if you plan on taking it to the strip often then get a t-45, t-3650 or a tko-500. Find a donar car for the rear end, and get a mean exhaust so others know that you are no longer a sixer[sm=gears.gif][sm=bounceybounce.gif]
