knocking
i noticed that when i go up hills i hear a slight knocking sound
i asked my dad to drive it and he said he heard it too and that it may get worse
he said that for the price of a rebuild on the engine i could just as easily drop a v8 in there
now my only objections to this would be, new suspension to support the new engine, new transmission to handle the new engine, new exhaust to replace the 6 banger y pipe and new computer and gauges
should i just ditch it or should i do the engine drop and do all the other stuff?

are you 100% positive its knocking and not an exhaust leak? these cars are prone to get one on the passenger side weld from the header collector to the front cat. it gives it a kind of ticking noise.
and noa 4.2 will not sound any more like a v8 at all. the v6 is an even firing engine and the v8 is not. it will never sound like the v8.

The first thing I would do is find out what the knocking is you heard. Like Amrcnidyot said, it could be an exhaust leak. Then once you find out what the knock is then you can decide if you want to rebuild or do an engine swap.
