clutch cable
I am really a chevy guy so my sons 88 mustang confusses me. He keeps breaking a little cable that goes between the clutch fork and a bell crank thing (something to change the direction of the main cable motion). It's a short little cable. Last time I replaced it , I couldn't find any way to adjust the clutch. It felt like it wasn't engaged all the way. Then after a few days he heard a pop and then the clutch felt like it should. What do I need to do to fix this right this time. Oh, it's a 4 cyl if that makes any difference. Thanks for any help.
Hey there,

I'm a new Mustang owner, yet I have already have picked up a lot of knowledge on the Fox bodies thanks to my boss. That popping noise is the self adjusting mechanism; standard for all manual 'stangs. I have an aftermarket cable on my '86 GT that eliminates the mechanism and has an adjuster right outside the firewall. It was installed before I got the car but could figure out where it was acquired. I know it wasn't cheap ~ $130.

On fox chasis, with the manual, they have an adjusting clutch cable, and how you adjust them is at the pedals inside the car. What you do is, hopefully I can explain this well enough, find where the clutch cable enters in through the firewall. On 88 it should be right next to the throttle cable. Once you found where the cable comes into the car, notice that its attachedto a kind of a white-ish yellow plastic semi-circle with teeth. And thatsemi-circle's teeth is in contact with a much smaller chunk ofplastic which is what controls the amount of tension on the clutch cable. To adjustthe actual cable, you can kind of pull apart the smaller chunck of plasticfrom the bigger semi-circle.Than rotate the semi-circle to thetensionyou want and letgo of the smaller chunk of plastic. They should"latch" backtogether andyou should be all set. The semi circle is actuallymore of a 1/4 ofcircle, but you really can't miss it once you get underneath your dash.kind of alate post butI just joined and Ijust put a manual intomy 1987and had to adjust the cable the same way.
