Wider tires, amazing springs, lower it about two inches, get a tighter steering rack and pinion, and full independent rear suspension off of an old cobra, You could also concider some weight reduction so you don't have soo much mass to fling around the corner. With that you should be able to handle as well if not better than any import.
By the way, Mustangs, with few exceptions, were never designed to handle well so I wouldn't get your expencations up too high unless you have alot of cash to throw at the car.

full griggs suspension, 18x11 tires all the way around, Tiger Racing front fenders and some 315/30 tires in a competetion compound.
should be easy to do.
if you have the cash
or you could buy an Ultima GT and throw on some racing tires

Stay away from the Ford IRS. I looked into it for a long time when I was building mine. Most of the hard core corner carving Cobra owners got rid of it in favor of the solid 8.8".
How much do you want to spend. having a vert will work against you. The first thing to do it stop body flex. Get rid of your facotry subframes for some good full length. Strut brace (four point and nothing less) for under the hood. Go to Maxium Motorsports or Steedaand buy one of the grip packages.....you'll get shocks, struts, matched springs and increased sway bar sizes that all work together well. Often times if you start mixing and matching stuff, you won't get a good end result.
Also upgrade your brakes. Cobfra take offs are dirt cheap these days. If you really want to get into them, SSBC, Baer, Stillen, Wilwood etc.... are all good name brands.
For wheels, get 17x9 with good tires. I like BFG KD for street use. I haven't found anything that matches my set up better. On the track, I do use R compounds at all four corners, but don't do that on the street. They require higher temps to stick well, and will end up hurting you if you try to make them move while they are cooler.
After you get comfortable with all that, look into a tubular K member, A arms and K member brace for the front, and investigate 5 link rears.
