Default Help me diagnose

Turned on my car and it stayed at around 200 rpm, barely, and was about to turn off on me so I gave it some gas and it backfired. It crawled up to it's normal idle RPM level but then when I started driving the engine was sputtering and at a great loss of power. Check engine light was flashing.

I have it parked here at work waiting to take it to a mechanic, just need some insight on what can cause this to happen.
