Im sure everyone has heard this before, and there may even be some anwsers out there that i can not find...but, im on my last da*n nerve with this car. I have a 2001 V6...very few mods that include air intake and dual exhaust etc... my deal is, when i accelerate, along with the low pitch of my exhaust, I hear a "ticking" noise that seems to be coming from under the hood, and the harder and longer i press on the gas (accelerate), the louder and more consistent the "ticking" is. My problem, it doesnt tick when the car is in idle, and I cant get it to tick when i put it in drive with the e-brake pulled and press the gas / throttle. So, unless I am literally driving the car (accelerating) i cant pinpoint where in the hell it is coming from. I felt all around my seals on my exhaust, and it doesnt seem to be leaking anywhere. ANY IDEAS ????

 

I could be completely wrong...it's late right now. But I swear my friend just took his truck in for the same thing and it was U joint. Maybe that's the problem?

 

seems i remember my mustang making this noise... cant remember... reguardless, ur car hasnt broken down or overheated so maybe its just a mustang thing.

 

my guess would still be exhaust leak. the weld from the header collector to the first cat on the passenger side is a weak spot.

 

Try going down a hill and coasting with the clutch in to see if it keeps ticking. If it stops with the slower engine rpm I would think exhaust leak on the passenger side header.

Do all the tests with the a/c on then off.

 

Then put it in neutral going down a hill. If the ticking continues with the cars speed (not engine) I would check the U joints, wheel bearings and rear end.
