I've got a 98, and I"ll tell you what I did to get it running good. Oil change, transmission fluid change, new air filter (should have gotten a K&N, but I got the cheapy 10 buck paper filter because I didn't know), new fuel filter, removed silencer, ran seafoam through vaccum hose and tank, new plugs/wires, radiator flush, new serpentine belt, new rear main seal (mech did it while changing tranny fluid and installing new slip yoke), and probably a couple other things I just can't remember.

as far as tire pressures go, I've noticed that the higher pressures I used, the better mileage I get. Right now I'm running 42 front 40 rear, and its excellent. I may drop my front down to 41, because my front tires need to be just a hare softer for hard cornering. I've tried everything from 32 to 44, and 42/40 is the best I've found. It may differ for your tires, but for my goodyears, this works excellent.

but once you get it running good, you'll love it. My car runs like new almost after all the work i've done on my 66k miles engine.

Auto or Manuel? You might have already said it, and I missed it, but if it is a auto, I would look into a tuner/chip firt thing. That allow to load a higher octane tune,as well as adjust shift pressure. More power as well as better trans. performance is a + from one mod. Some tuners alsoallow youtoload an Economy tune for better MPG, and the tuner will be able to maximizethe benefit of and intake /exhaust work.
